GREENWOOD CEMETERY

Greenwood Cemetery was established by the Firemen’s Charitable & Benevolent Association in 1852 when America was struck with an epidemic of yellow fever.

In 1838, Cypress Grove Cemetery became the first cemetery built to honor New Orleans volunteer firemen and their families.

Burial Records

Cypress Grove and Greenwood cemeteries provide a final resting place for volunteer firemen who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty and for their families. In time, other heroes were laid to rest in these hallowed grounds: mayors, congressmen, business leaders, and soldiers from almost every conflict since the Civil War.
